Some professors simply enjoy the authority. Based on this student's email and the professor's response, which only confirmed that what the student was arguing was true, it is quite clear that the professor has absolutely no grounds for refusing to remove the late penalty from this kid's grade.
This thread was posted to Reddit's r/mildlyinfuriating subreddit, and normally, we don't support students who complain about grading mistakes. Most of the time when these stories come up, we're dealing with a Tracy Flick type who can't stomach the concept of a B+ (and in some cases, an A-). But in this case, we're actually dealing with a professor who refuses to acknowledge that their student was, in fact, correct and deserves to have their grade penalty removed.
